3-25-10  IMPORTANT!  This bill will be worked on Tuesday, March 30th.  We need your help NOW!

The Slots Bill for the  Woodlands is out of Committee. It is now Senate Bill 2180. One problem with the bill is that it took Wichita out of the bill. We really need Wichita and Pittsburg to be included in the bill since the horse industry will receive 7% of the slots revenue.  We need all of you to call Sen. Derrick Schmidt's office and ask that he put Wichita back in the bill. The reason being that it will help the horse industry and the entire Agra-Business industry in the State.  His phone # is 785-296-2497.

Please contact your legislators and also contact Steve Morris as well.

3-8-10

Bill McGuire is working on a petition to send to the Kansas State Senate, Chair of the Federal and State Affairs Committee.  If you would like your name to be added to the petition, please email Bill at bmcguire@cloud.edu.  Click here to view the petition that was sent to Sen. Taddiken.  The same language will be used in this petition.  Click here to view.

We are asking our members to contact their state legislators to ask them to pass HB #2516 and SB#401.  Talk to your legislators about how the slot revenue would help with social services - there would be more money in the state from the slots at the race tracks.  Thank you.

New Watchdog Website Monitors the Humane Society of the United States
HumaneWatch.org Scrutinizes Biggest American Animal Rights Group, Separates
Fact From Fiction

Washington, D.C. - Today the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) is announcing
the launch of HumaneWatch.org, a watchdog project dedicated to analyzing the
activities of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). HumaneWatch
will include a blog written by CCF's Director of Research, a growing
document library, and a database capable of tracking the dozens of nonprofit
(and for-profit) organizations that make up HSUS's sprawling financial
empire.

The Humane Society of the United States has become the animal rights
industry's most powerful player, but it has avoided serious public scrutiny
for years. HSUS raises nearly $100 million annually from Americans who
largely believe their donations filter down to local pet shelters and
improve the lives of dogs and cats. But in 2008, less than one-half of one
percent of HSUS's budget consisted of grants to actual hands-on "humane
societies" that deal with the thankless task of sheltering unwanted pets.

Please take the time to go to this site, a Wyndotte County newspaper, and vote in the poll they are doing. Polls such as these can carry an important message to legislators. There will be a big organized effort to sway this poll opposite of what we want so it is very important that we forward this on to anyone we can that would take the time to cast a response. PLEASE pass this on to as many as you know that would be willing to help out.

Thank you.

2-04-10 Thank you to all of our members who testified at the legislative hearings, Gail Radke, Pam Davis, Kelly Clark and Dr. Bill McGuire.  Please keep in touch with the bills progress.  Thanks again everyone!

1-27-10

Senate Bill #401 and House Bill #2516 have been introduced into the KS Senate and the KS House of Representatives. Senate Bill #401 is in Senator Brungart’s Federal and State Affairs Committee. House Bill #2516 is in Representative Neufeld’s Federal and State Affairs Committee.

On January 27th Senate Bill #401 will be heard by the Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee. As you know, citizens can give testimony (both pro and con) before the Committee at this time. Jeff Rutland, Kurt Eck, and Rita Osborn are going to give testimony as pro advocates for passage of Senate Bill #401. I will not be there but I am sending written testimony to be given to Committee members. I would encourage any KQHRA members who are able to attend this hearing. It will take place on January 27 at 10:30 a.m. in Room 144 South. A show of force is always impressive.

On February 3rd House Bill #2516 will be heard by the House Federal and State Affairs Committee. Again Citizens can give testimony (both pro and com) before the Committee at this time. Once again we (KQHRA and horsemen in general) need to be there in force to support passage of House Bill #2516. At present we are working to appoint persons to testify. If you are interested in speaking on February 3rd contact Jeff Rutland or Bob Rodgers. Once again, we need our membership to show up in force to support passage of House Bill #2516. The Hearing will take place at the Capitol in Room 346 South at 1:30 p.m. on February 3rd.

Click here to download Senate Bill #401 and House Bill #2516 so that you can read and understand what they are about. In a nutshell they are both exactly the same, and it is legislation that is needed to make the gaming “slots” at racetracks viable in Kansas. Please show in force for both hearings. We need the support of everyone.

Thank You,

Robert Rodgers
President, KQHRA
